Campo De Color

At the 55th Venice Biennale, the international contemporary art exhibit, Bolivian artist Sonia Falcone created this installation for the Latin American Pavilion, titled Campo de Color (Field of Color). She depicted the important role Venice played in the international trade in spices and pigments by filling hundreds of clay dishes with mounds of spices and pigments including some from the New World: mustard, turmeric, cocoa, cayenne, chili, achiote, pepper, cinnamon, thyme, curry, paprika, and more. The large room housing the installation was dimly lit but incredibly aromatic, like a spice market anywhere.
