While walking through the back streets of Venice on our first day there, I became aware of a slight “presence”, a faintly ominous feeling that someone was watching me. When I realized that this feeling came from doorbells, I was quite relieved – no one was following me or waiting to mug me. Over the next few days I found many of these combination doorbell/intercom/letter slots as I explored the city, each one having its own personality.
