BLUE SHUTTERS, RED ROSE
PONT-AVEN
Just upstream from the village of Pont-Aven is the famous Bois d'Amours, a deeply shaded fairyland of a park winding along the banks of the Aven. Made famous by painters such as Paul Gauguin and his followers, the Bois d'Amour is still a very peaceful respite from the exhaust-spewing tour busses which crowd the narrow streets of the town during the summer season. At the head end of the Bois, an old stone cottage stands sentinel, watching over a footbridge over the river. Painted in the ubiquitously traditional Breton blue, the shutters balance compositionally with the single red rose, a late bloomer in the late September sun.
