CHATEAU LES MILANDES
Built in 1489 by Francois de Caumont for his wife, Les Milandes became the home of the American singer/dancer Josephine Baker. Today it is a museum dedicated to her life and career including many of her costumes and hundreds of playbills and other ephemera. Perched high on a bluff overlooking the Dordogne river, it is also home to an extensive aviary of raptors and a daily raptor show. We knew the castle was the home of Josephine Baker, but were very pleasantly surprised by the bird show. Imagine seeing an owl following its master around, running, not hopping, after him like an eager little puppy.
