COLLONGES LA ROUGE
Collonges la Rouge, one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France," is different from all the other pretty villages. It is, as its name implies, red. Every building in the town is made of red stone unique to this particular region. On our last day in the Perigord region, we walked from Ligneyrac to Collonges and back, a distance of perhaps 5 kilometers each way. Through walnut orchards being harvested, past farms and stone buildings of timeless beauty, we spent one of the most wonderful afternoons before heading back to our "Chambre d'Hote" in the tiny village of Turenne, one of the -- wait for it! -- "Plus Beaux Villages de France."
