LOW TIDE IN PONT-AVEN
At the top of a tidal estuary seven miles inland from the southern coast of Brittany is the picturesque port of Pont-Aven. (The "n" in Aven is pronounced since it is a Breton word, not French.) Shops, restaurants, businesses, and hotels, some with thatched roofs, line the quai. When the tide is out, the Aven river is barely a trickle through the mud flats, leaving many of the moored boats high and dry. Painted in the traditional Breton blue, this one has side boards to keep it upright at low tide.
