La Boétie's Angel, Sarlat LA BOÉTIE'S ANGEL, SARLAT

Sarlat-la-Canéda is a medieval town which has somehow managed to escape destruction by war or modernization by developers. It is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The pedestrian zone of the old town center, surrounds the magnificient cathedral of Saint Sacerdos. Facing the cathedral is the house of Étienne de La Boétie, a 16th century writer, judge, and outspoken critic of the monarchy as an institution. Above the wide arching door to his house is this intriguing angel floating beneath a wonderful symbol of love. Votive candle glasses are indications of a recent festival.
