Brunello Grapes, Montalcino, Italy

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

A short bus ride south of Siena is the perched hill town of Montalcino, famous for its Brunello wine, purported to be one of the finest wines in Italy. From Montalcino we hiked about ten miles further south to the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo. We walked through many vineyards, like this one, with fully ripe fruit. Some vineyards were being harvested as we passed, all by hand. After we returned to Montalcino on the local bus before heading back to Siena, we visited several tasting rooms to sample the local wines.
