IL CAMPO DI SIENA
Siena, Italy is famous for its renaissance tower and the piazza in front of it where horse races have been held for hundreds of years. These races, the palio, pit teams from each of the city's 17 neighborhoods in a ceremony with such colorful pomp, like a renaissance festival. Almost completely enclosed like an ampitheater, entering it through one of the narrow alleyways is a real surprise as the space opens up in front of you, quite a contrast from the dark and narrow streets in the area all around the piazza. We were not in Siena at the right time to see the race, however we did manage to meet the winning horse, but that's another story.
