VERNAZZA UMBRELLAS
The busy tourist summer season on the Italian Riviera is over, it is October, and this restaurant on the piazza facing the small harbor of Vernazza, one of the five Cinque Terra villages, is closed, its umbrellas furled for the winter. Looking at this scene with the umbrellas, the laundry, the bold splashes of color of the wall and shutters, I saw this with an impressionist view and so manipulated the image to take it out of the realm of photography and into another, less codified realm.
