DESERT HORSE, RED CANYON, UTAH
Heading east toward Bryce Canyon on Utah’s scenic Highway 12 one passes through Red Canyon. Most people drive right past in a hurry to get to Bryce and they fail to see some wonderful easily accessible landscapes. Short trails head into the back country filled with hoodoos and the bright red rocks which give the canyon its name. Dust from the red rocks is everywhere and the dry climate preserves dead trees for many many years. Someone has said that the dessicated juniper tree trunks one finds in these canyons may be several hundred years old. Many of the twisted and contorted trunks seem to hold figures, spirits from earlier lives locked in the juniper forever, like this horse.
