TURTLE POND, MARTHA’S VINEYARD
Surrounded on three sides by Sengekontacket Pond, a tidal estuary just outside of Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary is operated by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Miles of trails through woodland and along beaches invite prolonged nature study. Turtle Pond, with its boardwalk across marshy ground, is surrounded by forest. Standing out from the verdant forest on the shore of the pond was one lone dead tree, its gray-white trunk blazing in the afternoon summer sun. The rippling water and the stark graphic quality of the reflection just grabbed me.
