ATTEMPTED ESCAPE
New Year's Day, 2002, in Portland, Oregon. The city was drying out from a freak snowstorm the day before that had dumped at least 8 inches in the hills above the city making Council Heights a fabulous place to sled and tube (we did!). Out on Hawthorn, though, I came across this closed service station with its blue exhaust hose curling across the pavement as if it had tried to get away but had thought better of the attempt.
