In the summer of 1955, the Tenney family went to Echo Lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, near Lake Tahoe, staying for a couple of weeks in this rustic little cabin on the shore of the Upper Lake. Willie Tenney's older brother, John, took this snapshot at the "Hatch Cabin" with his Kodak Brownie (to avoid sibling rivalry, we each got an identical camera that summer). Between little Willie and his father is Dearie, the family dog, while Willie gingerly holds his own Brownie in his lap.
To see some two other insanely great photos taken by Will's brother John (age 9 at the time), check out John's stunning portraits of downtown Chicago in 1955, taken from the steps of the Chicago Art Institute -- Chicago Portrait #1 and Chicago Portrait #2. Shades of Stieglitz! And speaking of "big name" photographers, our neighbor in Berkeley, Dorothea Lange, made some portraits of Will Tenney in 1957 including the one shown here, horsing around with his friend the late Jim Shobring. |
