Koper Archways

Just over the border from Italy into the tiny sliver of Slovenia that touches the Adriatic, Koper is an ancient town. At one time it was an island, ideal for protection from enemies. The influence of its Italian heritage is everywhere, especially in the architecture. Buildings arch over narrow streets on steep hills, reminding me of Perugia. Italian is still one of the two official languages, and the name of the town in Italian is Capodistria (Head of Istria). We had a wonderful lunch at a sidewalk café — a truffle frittata.
